Catskill Outfitters Located
in Walton, NY, on the West Branch of the Delaware River, Catskill
Outfitters offers a variety of river experiences for canoe, kayak and
tubing enthusiasts from the novice to the expert. A trip
down the river is an ever-changing adventure. The depth and speed of
the river changes with the seasons. In spring and early summer
the river is swift, but navigable. During the late summer and early autumn, the ride is slow and leisurely. The headwaters of the West Branch
spring up in Stamford and wind their way through Delhi and on past Walton.
Along the way the river flows under two historic covered bridges and winds its way through hamlets and
villages that were settled at the turn of the 19th century.
Local residents take full advantage of the playground in their backyard
but the wonders of the West Branch are largely undiscovered by the
outside world. Often the only people you encounter on the river are
fishermen waist deep in their waders and occasionally children
launching themselves into the river from rope swings tied to sturdy
tree limbs.
Wildlife abounds on the river, ranging from the wild
rainbow and brook trout that live in the water to the white-tail deer,
foxes, raccoons, otters, mink, squirrels, chipmunks and even an
occasional bear that come to the water's edge to drink.
Along the expanse of river between Sherwood's Bridge and the Delaware
County Fairgrounds there are two bald eagle's nests. In addition
blue heron fish in the shallows, while great horned owls and dozens of
varieties of songbirds make their homes in the trees that line the
banks. |
